XJ crowl intake

So i been doing alot of reading into these custom systems. My first Question, do you still use a cone or you just leave the end of the pvc or tube open? Ive seen both ways just curiouse on whats best. Secondly, i always thought those vents were the crowl is going was for water run off? Will heavy ran become a problem? Any one way systems i can maybe install to block water build up? Also herd the increase in air with these systems can actully increase gas milage by 1-2 mpg.

I would keep you stock air filter box. From my experience the aftermarket intake cones are nothing but trouble for offroading. I put a K&N on my GF's 2000 xj and its been a nightmare. Yes you can buy the recharge kits, but it gets crudded up with crap so quickly. If you go through deep puddles the water will soak it and you Jeep will be dead till it drys. This happened a few times to hers. And when it was dry, I really didnt see any significant difference in HP or GM. There is a write up some where on JF about making a shield to block splashes but its still not full proof. Im still looking for a stock air filter box for her to get rid of the intake system. Her father threw it out. Unless your going to run a full snorkel which is totally unnecessary around here, stick with the stock box.

My question is were the second hose goes to should i leave it an open end or put a filter on it? both have been done just dont know whats best. I love going into deep mud pits and water so i think this would help

Yea I dont know to much about them. But some of those setups still uses a cone filter with a flat mat filter and it is exposed more than just having the flat filter in the box, even with the little protection it gets from the wall. I dont trust the exposed cones. As for you question...I would think it would be better to put a filter on it. I dont see anything good that can come from a open end in an intake system...

first off its cowl, second you should always have a filter on your engines air intake, third there are only vent holes over the driver side of the cowl(where your windshield wiper motor is located. People look like their doing it one of two ways. getting rid of the stock box and going with a cone filter stuffed inside the cowl or just making a second hole in the stock air box under the flat filter and running a large dia. dryer vent hose up into the cowl.

i am not a fan of either, as i am not often in deep enough water. i do believe there is room for improvements on XJs induction, but I'm happy with keeping a good clean stock filter

I really don't see the piont of it, if you are flying through puddles and stuff it seems just as easy for water to get in there. Just get a snorkle.

sorry for mistaking the name, it was late when i made the thread. Secondly i was going to keep the box filter in just wasent sure about the cone. And lastly i though the same thing about the splashes. I feel like it will get into your intake more easyly. I just herd about this over on JP evryone says how great this is etc and says evryone should basically do it lol. Idk and snorkle look really aint my thing.

The problem I could see with running through the cowl would be when you hit any water, if it goes over the hood its gonna go right in there unless you had some kind of drain set up or something. If it didnt go over the hood it might get you a bit deeper though.

from what Ive read it seems like there is increased noise from the sucking of air through the cowl, i'm not 100% on this but I think that your HVAC receives its air from the cowl as well, other then that people seem happy with it, idk its up to you. if you do it, take your time and do it right. I think it will be shitty to have a huge hole in your fire wall if something goes wrong. but hell go for it. i would love to see the finished project.
