can you hook me up with your uncle, I need to swap an engine in my XJ and cant find a garage to do it in.
The codes were P1486 and P0138, evap and O2 code respectively.
I see that the evap code is a real pain... it could be literally anything. Going to try that code clearing first... thanks!
Lucky I have an mechanic uncle who owns and works on jeeps regularly. He's an hour away, but I'll be going there Wednesday to start diagnosing and working on it with him. Much better than 99.88 an hour...

My uncle is down in Poughkeepsie. I'm not sure if he's equipped to handle an engine swap, but I'll ask tomorrow when I go down there! They closed the dealership where he was working and he's always looking for work. I'll let you know.
Thanks much apreachiated. My budget right now is very tight, so I dont have alot to offer at the moment. Hoping that will change soon.

Well im home with no All Data or Mitchell. But i Googled the O2 code and it looks like its a bad down stream O2. The one after the cat. Not unusual. High voltage code. Usually mean the O2 has gone bad. Ill double check tomorrow.

Thanks! You've all had some great advice!
It has been beaten into my brain (and probably most others here) that if you replace your O2s only use NTK or Mopar, others get lazy quick and need replacing sooner. Rockauto has NTK ones at decent prices if your uncle can't get them from his parts dealer.

So... this morning on my way to see my mechanic uncle I stopped for gas and, remembering what I'd read in the forums about those check engine codes, I added a little spit to the rim of the gas cap and some extra elbow grease on the screw-in and BOOM... no more check engine lights. They've stayed off all day. Code reader read nothing... Excellent!
Steering box getting replaced... all is well so far...
Steering box DONE... the pitman arm was a PITA!! Had to have it heated to remove it!
O2 sensor had to be heated, then the female end on the cat stripped, so had to have it cut out and welded a new one in... PITA!!
Gas cap was causing the exhaust error, new one, no problemo.
New brakes... HOORAY.
Next it'll be a rust busting project and then a bedliner of some sort. Maybe LINEX. There's a guy I know who'll do it for about 300 he said... And then there's the LINEX people that want like 550, but it's guaranteed for life... hmmmm....
just order monster liner off the island, you can get it in a variety of colors and do it yourself for less than the 300 that guy you know will do it for.
