Thread: Engine Knock

  1. I am waiting to hear from Matt, He should be calling me this morning some time.

when I got home I discovered I can upload vids directly to YouTube from my phone, so I took a short vid of the noise at about 2330 and after 4.5 miles of driving and at op temp.

    Here it is:

What do you guys think? I am thinking it could be piston rods. I was able to hear it a bit better and seems like its coming from the rear around cylinders 5 and 6. I am not 100% sure, and will be taking the covers off this weekend to try and figure out exactly what is wrong.

If a man speaks in the forest, and no woman is around to hear him....is he still wrong?

  2. I am hoping that is just a push rod or lifter as I already have those parts here at the house. If it is more than that, I have to way the cost of parts vs whole JY engine.

  3. my list of possible noise makers are:

    push rod
    rocker arm??
    lifter
    piston skirt
    spun rod bearing
    spun main bearing

These all came from different sources, and a few comments on vids of similar sounds on YouTube

My 91 wrangler had a bad wrist pin.

Mile marker sec 8 winch, 23 gallon gas tank, custom made rear bumper

  5. ok, so add that to the list

    push rod
    rocker arm??
    lifter
    piston skirt
    spun rod bearing
    spun main bearing
    Wrist pin

If I remember correctly the wrist pin is what hold the piston to the piston rod. Been about 6-7 years since my last in depth engine rebuild. Last one I did about 4 years ago was just the top end.

  6. both previous engine builds were in a 95 mustang with the 3.8L V6.

Question... with the valve cover removed, how can I turn the engine over enough to see if I have oil making it to the top of the head without running the engine itself and getting oil all over the place? Or can I jun the engine for a short time with the valve cover off and be fine not spraying oil all over the place?

you can run the engine with the cover off.. It will deff make a mess but it wont hurt anything.

  8. yea, not trying to make a mess... and it looks like I can drop the oil pan with the eninge still in place, just have to put the frame rails up on stands and drop the axle all the way down... its gonna be a fun weekend.

Actually, when the axle is at full drop it get in the way of removing the pan. When i have one on the lift i have to jack up the axle and some times the tranny to be able to get the pan out and back it.

I would pull the valve cover and have a look there first since its pretty easy to remove. If there is nothing wrong there then drop the pan.
