30-30's work great for whitetails. 30-06 work very well too and also can handle bear no problem. I use a 30-30 PUMP, i know a pump rifle you say? yes. when im up near syracuse i use a remington 870

As others suggested the 30-30 and 30-06 are great if your looking to hunt deer. 30-06 being more powerful, but that power comes with more recoil. If you don't mind a gun that kicks then look into the 30-06s. I know I'm gonna get 1 in the future. If my pop gives me the 30-30 that is, otherwise I'm just gonna go straight for the 30-06. He's good on his word so the 30-06 is gonna have to wait a few years.

There's a lot to take into consideration, make, model, caliber, etc. I know in the next few years I will have a good rifle. its a shame that you cant hunt with semi-auto. I would love to get an AR-15 as a home protection AND hunting rifle, but I will still get the AR-15 regardless.

Honestly if you can only get one gun get a 12 gauge with slug and smooth bore barrel.

Then you can use sabot slugs for big game hunting and still small game hunt with the small bore.

You can hunt with a semi auto, i shot my first deer with a semi auto .308

Yeah semi autos are legal. My dad's 30-06 is semi auto. Full auto I believe is illegal.

12 gauge's are very nice to have also. I love having mine for multiple reasons, homeprotection is one of them. and definitely go smoothbore to give you versatility with ammo types. you can always get rifled slugs or even sabots for a higher performance slug if you wish, while still maintaining the ability to use buckshot. just dont expect it to shoot as far as a rifle. however i still enjoy shooting my 16 gauge bolt action from time to time, and the .410 is nice for small game hunting, however i would rather use my .22LR for that
