  1. 5000W Triple Battery Powerhouse

    5000W 120V WJ Powerhouse

Being in the construction feild of work I noticed that a lot of the times on jobsites we have a hard time getting electric from the building, so we must lug around the trailer for the 5000watt generator. I decided; why not use something a little more quiet. Not only could I use it for jobsites but camping trips with no electricity aswell...im sure its been done plenty of times but this is what I came up with.

I took two marine grade gel cel batteries with 1000+ CCA's each, and mounted them inside a black hardware tool box I bought from home depot [about $25], then I purchased a 5000W 12V-120V inverter and mounted it on top of the box. I wired the two batteries together, and then to the Inverter.

As you can see, my first idea was to make a double ended 12V Cigarette Lighter plug and have it charge off the rear cig lighter, but low and behold the amps were much too much for the tiny wire. So I decided to run a 4 gauge cable from the truck battery [Optima Yellowtop] to the powerbox in the back. I then grounded off the box to one of the rear seat mount bolts. The box charges off the stock alternator [although i should consider purchasing an aftermarket one with more amps] and will run powertools, lights, vaccumes, power washers, even a 120 welder...pretty much anything I have thrown at it.

So here are some pictures of the box:

Let me know what you guys think...the box works great and is EXTREMLEY convenient!

  2. i wanted to do something similar but you loose a lot of cargo space. its pretty bulky haha. im guessing the grand total for everything was a pretty penny? and look into a mean green alternator or do some research on v8 wjs and see if its a direct bolt in alternator. im sure it will push out more amps. goonies told me about the zjs and hes right.

Very cool. I need to start looking into something along those lines. Maybe not to that extent but I want to mount a second batt on my interior spare tire carrier to run a winch in the very near future. Plan on getting some sort of converter as well. Nice job!

Yeah i found through some forum searching that the ZJ V8 alternators put out like 130 amps compared to the in line 6s 70 amps. just have to mod the mounting brackets a bit. I want to do the upgrade before this winter to help with the load the snow plow pump puts on the charging system.
