So this weekend I sold my factory hardtop off my TJ. Just in time for winter... ahaha I know, people are telling me im crazy. I dont care! I took that money and order this..Rampage Bowless Fastback Top
http://www.quadratec.com/products/11119_1115_07.htm
Im very excited. My reasoning behind this was:
1. Durability- The fact that Ive already smashed my hardtop against a tree and cracked it. I did a fiberglass patch on it and it looked and worked fine. But it was bound to happen again. The Sailcloth is said to be thicker than factory soft top material.
2. Weight- the factory hardtop weighs in at 150 lbs. Compared to the 18lbs that the new fastback will weight makes a huge difference in performance.
3. Sound- Having my interior Hurculined with my front flat fenders and rear wells ripped out made it echo like crazy. The cloth should deaden the sound a bit.
4. Accessibility - Even though winter is here. I hated the feeling of being trapped. There are those occasional sunny afternoons in winter Id wish I had my top off. This is the best of both worlds. Plus having the safari bikini in the summer and changing back and forth was a PIA.
5. I think it looks bad ass. More of an old school look to go with the CJ style flat fenders.
Here are some pics on other Jeeps that convinced me.

Looks good. I can't wait to build my flat fenders. I like the look of those soft tops, just have suicide bars Ild have to do the family bar swap.

Love that top, that's the one I want when mine needs to be replaced.
Do you have to remove the windows on this one?? I know there's another you don't have to do anything but drop the top and not even mess with the windows. That one interests me too cause I think it's a PITA removing the side panels just so they can get destroyed rolled up and jammed somewhere not to lose em.

this one the windows come off but the top does not fold down like a factory soft top. Its strapped on around the roll cage and when the windows are removed it becomes a safari bikini. No frame work. That can come off too and is not that bad to do. Ive had the safari for a few years now. Also the windows have a compartment/ storage pouch in the bikini top so you dont have to roll them up. No cracking or scratched. Ill just let the trees I drive threw do that!! ahhaha

Sounds like a happy medium between soft and safari tops.. You're the guinea pig for the rest of us to see it on I guess :) I've got another year or two left on mine but they are made pretty poorly fomr the factory. I've got a destroyed back window, fraying all around the velcro on the sides, a inner strap broke off, etc. looks ok from the outside though. I'm amazed how cheap they put it together though like they want you to come back every 3-4 years for a new top.

He just needs to have the balls to say 'screw it I can figure out no roof as I go'. Not to many people have balls or are crazy enough to take a perfectly good roof off a truck.

If I had a Cherokee I would have to put some serious thought into taking a sawzall to the roof. Just gotta find a good canvas place to make you on of those snap on covers.

If it was just me I would have cut that thing off a long time ago, but I use the XJ as my daily driver and drive my son to nursery school in it every morning

automat does great work but is crazy expensive and honestly i think a boat canvas shop would do well because they are geared up for buiding such stuff for boats and the materials are very similar to jeep tops and surely endure worse abuse. I had my trail cover for my tj repaired by a place that does alot of upholstery for boats. hmm wonder if they can replace the "windows" in my soft uppers cheaply, wonder if they can make them tinted ones.

You do know hacking the top off a cherokee throws off everything? People who just sawall's it im sorry but aren't that smart. There are tools made to do precise cuts so evrything comes out crips. After cutting evrything off you then need to reinforce alot of stuff. Im not going to get into detail but lets just say i talked to alot of shops about doing it to mine, its just not worth it unless u have a rollcage already.
Sema was suppose to put out an XJ with a cut back, i never saw one in person only pics

That was a good fire berm... Bears.....
True sawzall, isnt the most delicate way of going about it. But something about it makes me smile. Plus not every one has access to a plasma cutter
