View Full Version : Brake job
In you guys's opinion is it a bad idea for someone who has not worked on cars to replace the brakes calipers and rotors on their own and is it a very complicated job or do we need special tools?

Its super easy, allyou need is some a basic tool set,no special tools, needed, just make sure they get bled real good

Are you replacing the calipers or just the pads? Just take your time and make sure the bleeder valve is up. Make sure you also do not contaminate the surface of the pads or the rotors. Also, bleeding is much easier with 2 people if you are changing the calipers out.

Yeah its not so difficult it was one of the first things I did to my jeep and I had no prior auto experience. YouTube has a lot of videos showing how its done.

Hardest thing to do and its not so much hard is bleeding the new calipers. Doing this can be a little nerve racking for a newbie. Other than that its very easy. Just take your time and dont strip the caliper slide bolts. Any questions, feel free to give me a call at the shop. Maybe i can help. But it always helps to have someone help you that has done work like this before. They can walk you through it and let you learn.
Oh and P.S. this belongs in the General tech section LOL.

Talking about not stripping things, be careful with the line nut going into the calipers. They are soft and sometimes tend to corrode in place. If you have access to line wrenches they are much better to use than a standard crescent wrench and just be careful with it.

Part of the reason Ilike that vid.
yea she can give me a BJ any day... Brake Job that is.... not
Thanks guys. Really appreciate the input. If I have to walk into one more shop and have some rude mechanic give me a song and dance because I'm a chick I think I just might lose it. I've gotten six price quotes 300-600 so someone is trying to pull a fast one last guy tells me the hydroulic brake line is leaking. So I ask how bad is that and he starts scolding me that any leak is bad. I know for a fact that it's not a big deal to fix or replace but suddenly the price is 250 more for that line. And since the child insists on buying every old truck he can possibly find I figure it's time to start doing these on our own. I just haven't done brakes and being that it is vital to stopping I would def not want to mess up on it. But I'll watch the vids and see how difficult this looks.

yea brakes are one of the highest mark ups for shops it seems for some reason. IF you need to change out a brake line its still not a very big job. Just a few bolts.
* moving to tech section*
You can move this thread? Sorry wrong section, I now realize. And I'm not the only one up at 349am talking about brakes!

Good luck and remember not to rush.

All three. Calipers brakes and rotors. And it will be two newbs. So hopefully the truck stops after we are done!

Just be careful the first time you drive it, pump the brakes a few time before you get moving after starting it up.
