I have access to junk vehicles coming in to be crushed. What trucks have D44's in them that would have the correct width for my XJ? I dont care about the spring perches and shock mounts Ill be building my own.

Older Cherokees and Comanches had them. I think like 88 and 89s in that area. There easy to tell the gear ratio. The tag should say the ratio rite at the start of the tag #s. I know some of the early 90s Isuzu Rodeos, troopers and the Honda Passports (same truck) had D44. But i have no idea the compatability for your XJ on them. Also Ford Explorers. The 95? to 99? somewhere in there had the 8.8s with disc brakes. Good axle for the rears of the XJs Cost about $160 for the perch, shock and flange adaptor kits. You will probably find more 8.8s comin through than old D44ed Jeeps.
Where do you work that you have junkers comin through???

No $h!^. Wich one? Our tow truck guy runs cars for the Medford one when they get backed up. I couldnt work there though. I would spend my paycheck on scrappers and a yard to keep them in LOL. Thats how i end up with so much crap as it is. Kenny (our tow guy) cant bring cars back to the shop. He thinks im crazy. he pulls in with a scrapper and im climbing all over the truck before he gets out of the cab. Got a good CD deck AANNNDDD some sweet christmas lights yesterday LOL.
So dont you get cars all day or are you just one of the metal drop offs? or is it a bunch of Jeeps comin through? Better take pics.

I would truly be happy as a junk yard owner. But specialize in Jeeps but have everything else too.

Who says they charge us for parts..... hahahaha Small parts they dont care about. For the axles they will just weigh them out as mixed steel... cheap as hell.

Yeah seriously.... I could use a high pinion d30 or something to replace my d44a or a 242 transfer case....

what years had the 242?

It was an option in most of the years for the XJ's and ZJ's. The 242 is also known as Selec-Trac. It's the TC that has 2wd, Part-time, Full-time & 4Lo. So if you see an XJ or ZJ with those options, it's got the 242.
Now, there are differences in the 242's.... but I'm not sure exactly what they are. I'll have to look into it. But I think I need one with a certain spline count, but I'm not sure. And people recommend different years for different match ups. This write up sticky on JF goes through it all in detail. I'll have a read through and get back to you on specific years I'd be interested in.
Transfer Case Swap Info NP249->NP231 & NP242 - JeepForum.com (http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f13/transfer-case-swap-info-np249-np231-np242-685644/)
But pretty much anyone with a 249 TC will be looking for the 242 or 231 at some point. The 249 is known for going caput.

Well.... So I've been reading up on the 242. And all I can say is, it's complicated.
'95 and newer for the tcase, that'll ensure it's a 23 spline and has the right gear cut. But it needs to have an external slip yoke on the rear drive shaft. And the long (.840") input shaft. Plus, I have the crappy CV style front driveshaft.
That might have narrowed it down a little too much. But let me know if you find anything.

Ill try to keep my eye out for one... Some of the heavier parts I weigh back out on the scale and just give them scrap value for mixed steel... dirt cheap compaired to buying from a salvage yard or new. Its been a hectic week. prob wont be able to look untill next week. but I see grands dropped off all the time there.

I think the 93 Grand Wagoneer ZJ Woody we just junked went to the Bayshore Gershow. Keep an eye out LOL. There supposed to put the wheels and tires aside for me HAha. pisses me off that our driver scrapped that thing. He needed the money quick. And it had the most comfortable seats they ever put in a ZJ. the big pillow seats. Kinda grampa looking but freakin comfy.

Thought this might help you.
Dana Holding Corporation - The Expert Axle Bill of Material (http://www2.dana.com/expertforms/deabill.aspx)
One thing to note.... it doesn't seem to separate the d44a from the d44. Maybe it does and I can't read it. But that's something to watch out for. 96-98 ZJ's with a V8 will likely have the d44a.
But you should be able to take the code off the diff, put it in here, and it'll tell you what you got. Plus you can look through to see what years came with what.

If its a Larado you should have the 242. And as far as i can tell it will fit the 5.9. Find me any Jeep or Dodge Dakota with a 2.5 MPI 4 banger and i will buy it. Needs to be a 91 to 95. The Cherokees had them and the YJs had them. Also the square Dakota pickups. If i can get one for like $600 that would be a good deal for me. I can swipe the motor and scrap the rest and make some money back.
