Probably the best upgrade you can make to your truck or even car is a good set of tires. They help your vehicle perform the job you need them to do and in some cases enhance the look of your ride. This thread is for members to help others make an often expensive decision a little easier.
So if you have used a curtain tire and you loved / hated them. Tell us why. I have had the unfortunate pleasure of working for just about every tire retailer on LI. Sams Club, Pep Boys, WTC/STS and Mavis to name a few. So i have mounted and balanced literally thousands of tires. They are not all what they seem, or advertise.
Post your opinions on tires you have used past and present. Truck tires on your daily driver, weekend wheeler or your muscle car. Anything you have used. Please try to list plenty of info on there application. Where they on a lifted or stock suspension, Did you use them more for the beach or mud or all of the above. How well did they wear, sound, grip, clean, wet weather, snow, hot, cold perform. Cost, warranty, size, On and on. The more info the better.
Also if you can post picture of the tires. Stock photos or photos of the tires on your vehicle. Not everyone know what you are talking about when you list a tire. Pictures help someone in the market get an idea what they look like on a specific vehicle.
The more specs the better. Tire size, speed rating, load capacity, Rim width and back spacing. Actual real diameter of the tires. Alot of tires say 31 x 10.5 r 15 but if you measure there actual height they measure at 30 inches tall or 29 and 3/4s. You may think you can fit 31 inch tires but the ones you have been running are only 30s listed as 31s and you just bought REAL 31s and they dont fit.
Tires are costly. Help the less experienced make a good investment the first time.

This depends a ton on what you are doing with your truck. I ran BF Goodrich A/T's on my 78 Ford F250, size 33X12.5 R16.5 and they were great riding, got good mileage and wear, worked perfectly out on the beach and did well for me in snow.
My Rubicon came with the old Goodyear MTR's and they were terrible. They were loud, wore out quick, and dug at the beach. I went over to BFG A/T's and they were much better on the beach, quieter on the road, and lasted longer, but they aren't great in mud or rocks. I replaced those with the new Goodyear MTR with kevlar and so far I love them. They do well on road, on the beach, in mud, on rocks... now I do have to admit that I went up from stock Rubicon size of 245/75-16 up to a 315/75-16 when I went from the BFG to the new Goodyear so that could play into why these are so much better.
One more point is load rating. I have upgraded brakes so I am stuck at a 16 or bigger rim, but tires for 16 inch rims are all D and E load ratings while Jeeps would be able to run C's. So my trade off is stiffer tires that cause a slighty harsher ride in exchange for being able to stop better.

I have been running BFG MT km2s for around a year now they are 33x10.5x 15 and so far have liked them. I have them on my daily driver so they see a lot of pavement. They feel good in wet, dry, and snow. They are a little squirly when its icey though. The few times that Ive had them in the mud and rocks they have worked out well for me.
I have found that to get a good ride on them I am running them at around 25psi while on the street otherwise they are a bit of a hard ride. They started off quiet and have gotten a little noisier a year later. But the road noise is not untollerable.
Over all I have liked the tire and would recomend them on a dual purpose rig.

SUPER SWAMPER SSR Radial
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i334/dochopper09/100_0162.jpg
Ive been running 29 x 11.5 r 15 Super Swamper SSR radials on 3 different XJs and my MJ on and off for about 10 years. They came with my first XJ already on the truck or i probably would have never made the investment. BUT truth is i love these tires. There tuff as nails a good work horse. I use them on my daily driver but i put maybe 600 miles a month on my XJ. There probably not for someone who clocks in a ton of miles. But someone who like mud and serious durability these are your tires.
THE BAD
They are noisy and a hard ride. People hear you coming with these tires and you will feel bumps.
A little slippery in the rain. Not horrible but they will slip when you cross over the white line at an intersection when pulling from a light.
They need to be balanced with every rotation to get the best life out of them.
Heavy tire. Alot of rolling mass to pull and stop.
THE GOOD
Bullit proof!!! There should be rated as E load range. Hard sidewall that can take on sharp rocks with ease.
GREAT in mud. They dig and fling mud. Big lugs. I think the only tire better for mud would be there Bogger.
Great in snow. I use the XJ in the winter as a plow truck. I have guys with 1 ton trucks amazed at the snow that little truck can push with a 7 ft plow. Alot has to do with the tires gripping ability. They do get mild flat spots on really cold nights but round out after about a mile of driving.
Surprisingly good on the beach. Im running a short and wide tire. So short sidewall and large contact patch helps them float. Just dont spin them up in the sand.
Great looking tire. Nice sidewall with extra gripping wall that looks mean as hell.
Overall i love these tires but there not for everyone. I would not suggest as a heavily used daily driver but as an weekend wheeler or second daily driver i dont think you can beat them. They wear pretty good if you maintain them. I have had 2 sets and got about 40, to 50,000 out of them. They have gotten a little pricey. When i first bought some about 5 years ago they wer about $150. each in my size. Im looking to replace 2 soon and there at $200. each now. I was thinking of changint to another Swamper or another brand all together. In the end there just bad ass and i also dont have the money for a full set of a different tire.

Currently running the Goodyear Wrangler MTR w/Kevlar and love them. They are 35x12.50 R15. I ordered them from TireRack.com and $200 a tire. They really dont make much road noise at all, as far snow goes we all know what this past winter was like and they performed great. The mud and small bs rocks that they have seen posed no problems at all. I would highly recommend this tire for a dual purpose rig.

DEFINITY Dakota M/Ts
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i334/dochopper09/100_0168.jpg
The Definity Dakota M/T is Pep Boys store brand mud terrain. They are made by Cooper tires.
There a good starter mud terrain. Low price but for not much more you could step up to something a little better. They are low noise and have a nice aggresive tread. They do well in all weather conditions. They have a soft compound that grips well but wears quickly and needs regular rotations and balancing to prevent scaling like any mud tire. They work well in mud and have good sipping grooves to release mud. There biggest flaw is they are built on a regular non heavy duty carcass. There sidewalls are not thick or tear resistant at all. But that same soft sidewall is what gives them a nice soft ride that you give up with higher quality brand mud tires.
Ive run them on and off on a few Jepps ive owned before i lifted them. So they were run on stock or very close to stock suspensions. Ive run a set of freebie used 30 X 9.5 r15s. 2 of the set had bad scaling. But with a good balance and about 3,000 miles on the back of the Jeep they smoothed back out. I have also run them in 31 X 10.5 r15s. Again freebies but much closer to new. The 30 are really more like 29s and the 31 more like 30s. They also stand kind of skinny. Ive found that others tires have a better ballooning type stance. Overall for a daily driver that sees some good offroading there a good starter mud terrain. Low priced, good performance but not the strongest or longest lasting.

on my libby i run Goodyear Wrangler Tread Wright MTR's 245/75/16 and they have worked wonders. never got stuck once at rausch, and they are noisyyyyy as helllllllllllllll omfggggg but i love that about them. i have been told by a few that they are the loudest they have ever heard lol
on my wrangler i have 35x12.5x15LT Cooper Discovery STT. i have yet to take them off road but i hear lots of good things about them. So im debating on to get those again or new MTR's prolly with kevlar. i love Gamble's tires when i saw them and AaronTJ has them too and it seems that they both love them. my other friend has KM2's and he loves those too so im kinda stuckkkk :/

Post some pics people. On your rig or a stock photo. The people who dont know these tires want to see them working in the real world.

Mickey Thompson MTZ tires are bybfar the best I have ever owned. I have mud grapplers, swampers, swamper boggers and MTZs right now and I can tell you the MTZ tires are the quietest mud tire. They handle great in all weather snow, rain, dry. They preform outstanding in sand, mud and onroad. They last about 50,000 miles if rotated often and alignment is in check. I have nothing bad to say about them and they are MADE IN USA. I got a great deal on 315x75x15 (35x12.50x16) from All weather tire in Huntington. They were cheaper from them mounted and balancedthem for just the tires online. $2,450 mounted balanced out the door fora set of five. When they wear out I am definitely buying another set.

Cooper Cobra Radial G/Ts
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i334/dochopper09/100_0177-1.jpg
I know this is an offroad forum and were most interested in Offroad tires. But i know some of us have some classics or muscle, so why not.
I have been running Cooper Cobras on the ElCamino for a while now and i love them. There a cheaper but equally good alternative to BFGoodrich Radial T/As. The BFs seem to be a statis tire and have risen in price accordingly. But thats another discussion. Im running 275 / 60 R 15s on 7 inch wheels in the rear and 245 / 60 R15s on 7s up front. The fronts are to big and rub sometimes so i will be changing them soon. But otherwise they work great. Good looks with solid white lettering and good traction. They seem to wear well. They dont produce much smoke when lighting them up HE HEH. I dont drive the car in the snow or much in the rain but dry pavement they grip nicely. For my use there perfect. Also usually priced nice for a name brand.

OH also just because a tire has been reviewed does not mean you can not add your opinion. They may like that tire but if you hated its performance than speak up.

BUMP again!!! I thought this thread would take off. At the meet and greets all we talk about is our tires and prices we have gotten them for. Had a great conversation at the last meet and greet about the Tread Write retread tires. Its something i thought OO members would not shut up about. Not to be a jerk, but is this a forum for information or a mini Facebook :P You drive on them everyday.
Im running 31" general grabber at2's. theyre great on the sand and got good traction in the rain and on dry pavement. not too noisy at highway speeds (the exhaust note usually drowns everything out tho)
i have been thinking about upgrading to 33" baja claws, any inputs?
edit: since i have acquired my YJ after the winter i have no input on the snow traction of these tires

I love my KM2's. the price wasnt too bad either they were $920 total including shipping for 4 tires off of Tirerack.com for 33x12.5x15's. They perform great anytime i go wheeling.

I've got a set of old 33x12.5 bfg km1s. These tires have lasted me forever. They're getting to the end of their life now and man did they get loud. I will be going with 35x12.5 km2s when they come off back order.

Hey guys.... This guy that lives near me has a pretty nice jeep and when we talked a few months ago i told him I will be looking for tires soon. He called me today because he is selling his Firestone Destination le tires ( 31x10.5r15). These are the size tires I'm running now and was looking into purchasing tires online like 15 min before he contacted me so i may have gotten ahead of myself when I agreed to purchase the four tires for 350. I don't think the price is bad considering theres only 500 miles on them, and they are rated a 60K tire. I guess what Im getting at is I want to know if anyone has any exp with these. i wanted a aggressive looking tread but from what i see online this look kinda wimpy.

Ive mounted some before. There a good overall tire. But there just a very mild all terrain. If your looking for aggressive than there not the way to go. And $350 is an OK price. If they where like $250 they may get me to buy them. But to settle on something thats not REALLY what you want, then i think $350 is to high.

I 100% back these tires. THey came stock on my TJ and lasted a long while before they went bald. and my dumb ass didnt even rotate them. THe fronts wore down but the rears had a bunch of meat on them still. I was actually looking to go up to their 33x11.5 when i upgraded but Pepboys had those on back order. SO i went with Toyo MTs and am VERY satisfied.

I ran a 31" goodyear wrangler authority for a while and was thouroughly impressed by them. However they are sold exclusively by walmart.
Next tire i ran was a 33x12.5 bfg at. Ran them for a week and hated them for any serious crawling and even mild mud.
So that bought me too my current tires, 33x12.5 MT Baja Claws.. These tires have thouroughly impressed me. They ride decent on the road especially for an extremely aggresive tire. I drive them 5 hours to college at 70mph+ and they take it just fine and wear very good too boot. A little loud but that is too be expected. On rocks they grab real good and bite right in. On smooth ledges they spin some but I have never had a case where i would blame the tire for not gettign me up something. They perform great in mud too clearing the tread voids
quite well. I have gottent hem caked up in heavy clay mud but that is too be expected.
I have thrown everythign at the claws and would most definitly purchase another set. However my next ones woud most likely be the baja claw ttc, which offer grooved lugs to aid in traction. I forsee that helping alot with slick rock faces.

on my libby i run Goodyear Wrangler Tread Wright MTR's 245/75/16 and they have worked wonders. never got stuck once at rausch, and they are noisyyyyy as helllllllllllllll omfggggg but i love that about them. i have been told by a few that they are the loudest they have ever heard lol
on my wrangler i have 35x12.5x15LT Cooper Discovery STT. i have yet to take them off road but i hear lots of good things about them. So im debating on to get those again or new MTR's prolly with kevlar. i love Gamble's tires when i saw them and AaronTJ has them too and it seems that they both love them. my other friend has KM2's and he loves those too so im kinda stuckkkk :/

I had a set of 32 Mt/r 's on my TJ before I wrecked it. I never got to take it off road, but they handled wet/dry pavement and snow pretty damn good. I didnt think they were too loud.

She was running the tread wright retreads. Big reason they where so loud. Not true GY mud terrains.

I know they are not "major" off road tires but my LJ came with a new set of Firestone Destination A/Ts, things are great, ran them through some mud and snow with no issues, super quiet and smooth on the road.

Figured id chime in with some opinions on these tires now that ive been running them for a couple thousand miles. LOUD!!!!! is the best way to describe them LOL. They shake they howl they dont like to balance. But they grab like velcro to anything. Great for low street miles and beating the snot out of them in the woods. I have them on the 99 XJ now but i may pony up the cash for a radial Swamper and save these for the YJ project if i ever get to it. Cause the YJ will be a local drive and towed rig. Thats where these Bias plys will be happiest. Not a tire id recommend for a commuter or a rig that will see alot of highway miles.

I will absolutely back this. I was running the Destinations 235/75r15 before I lifted and I had 0 problems with them, other than costing me 600 bucks lol. They rode great, didn't wear all that quick, and had excellent grip on the beach and road, and didn't fail me for any wheeling I did on them including my trip to Rausch running blues and what not. When I blew one off the bead landing hard on one tire we blew it back on with some fire and it kept on going. The sidewall peeled a little but lost no air. Overall I loved the tires and would definitely buy another set if I was looking to go A/Ts.

No one for the Goodyear Duratrack? No one? Amazing.
I had a set of 31's on my 98 ZJ. The tread held up like an Iron skillet and the performance was amazing. I always say they stopped better on snow and Ice than they did on dry pavement.
We picked up a used set of 33's for the wife's LJ and have taken them wheeling. They did great in the mud and rocks but the sidewall had me worried as it is rather thin. No issues though. She complains that they spin out in the wet weather but then again she had never driven a rear wheel drive car that didnt have some kind of traction control in it and she takes the curves like shes driving a sports car so I dont think its a real issue and she is just too hard on the gas in the turns. When they wear out we will replace them with another set since they are less expensive than other tires in that category and have way better performance than the BFG and General AT's that I have owned. I wish they made them in a true 35 so I could put them on my jk for street use but the 315 series is only about 34.
I also had a set of the dakota Pep Boys MT's. They where nice and grippy and had a good ride for the first half of their life but once they wore the space between the tread blocks made it feel like I had Spacely Sprockets for tires. I could feel each one of the tread blocks hit the ground through my seat and at slow speeds the whole jeep would shake like it was in an earthquake. It also killed my gas mileage. I gave them up a lil early and bought the duratracks and the mileage went up almost 3 mpg's.
On my JK I run some ProComp Xtreme AT's for the street. They are nice and grip well in the wet and snow. They do pretty well off road and in the rocks but clog up in sticky mud. I liked them because the 35 inch tire actually measures out to 35 inches! For wheeling I run the old style MTR. They suck in the snow and wet but you cant beat them in the mud and rocks.

I've run a few tires and been in a few rigs over the years these are just some of my observations on some of the tires.
Stuff I've run
32x9.5 TSLs. Older then dirt got them used and they were on 2 diffrent rigs I owned for 4 years and sold them for almost what i paid for them to some one else. They wore like iron. on the east coast trails they worked good as a trail tire. dealing with mud rocks dirt ect with a good rating. Didn't quite get sticky on some harder lines on the rocks but never felt like it was purely the tire that held me back. On the road they are TSLs loud square and heavy
32x11.5 and 35x12.5 KM2s Simply the best DD trail tire for the northeast. Ran the 32s on an XJ and 35s on a TJ. They clean out great, stick to the rocks here very well. have good road manners for a mud tire. If your rig sees road use these should be on your short list.
33 13.5 pitbulls. had them on 2 diffrent sets of wheels one were 15x10s the other 15x8.75 bead locks. the problem I found with them is they don't hook up until 7-9 PSI on the wide wheels this lead to lost beads. now on the bead locks they just flat out work. best trail tire I've personally run. They work very well in the dirt, mud, slick, snow, they girp and bend around rocks great with the low PSI. That being said these are trail only tires and are some of the worst tires I've run on the road.
now for a few tires I've spent some time with
Pro Comp X-terrain. 33 12.5. good tires but they do seam to give up a good amount of grip to the KM2s on the same trails
MT-Rs with Kevlar. they just SUCK on east coast trails. they don't clean well next to no grip on the rocks if you get them wet. and that whole kevlar sidewall deal is a gimic as I've changed more sidewall sliced MT-Rs than any other tire on the trail combined (about 7) They may work out west but not on out mixed rock dirt and mud type trails.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this, I've been running the MT/R with Kevlar for about a year and a half with many trips to Rausch (I don't do many Red's but plenty of Black and under), local BS, and the beach (not really looking for traction there but aired down I get plenty of floatation) and I have never been left looking for more traction. They clean out great for me and have out-performed KM2's side by side in the same mud hole. I run 16" wheels which puts me on load range E tires so I air them down to about 8 PSI and they stick to everything. I also have gashes in the beads of my rims but haven't cut a tire yet. Maybe its more a case of drivers thinking they have bullet-proof sidewalls and getting a little careless about tire placement? I was nervous buying these, every set of tires I have previously purchased were BFG's over the last twenty-something years and I HATED the GY's that came with the Rubicon package but I haven't regretted these a single time since they went on. Differentstrokes for different folks I guess.

I only hit RC once or twice a year so can't really judge on those trails but the stuff we run tends to be tight and very technical with a mix of conditions. I've got one friend still on them and he's taking a knife to them so they work a little better until he can get new tires.

Just my perspective, but here's a few shots of my wheels and tires. The wheels are aluminum and have gotten chewed up pretty well by the rocks but the GY MT/R w/ Kevlar tires are unscathed;

Update: I hate these tires LOL. OK let me explain.
The bad: Horrible on the road. LOUD and shaky and they get flat spots over night and only work themselves out by the time i get to work since im 3 miles from work. Did i say LOUD. I had to wear ear plugs to drive to Rausch. That bad. And there so hard the tires got down to about 10 PSI before i checked the tires just to check them. The tires didnt look low LOL.
The good: unreal at Rausch. Ran them at 8 PSI and they grabbed whatever i needed them to. Never had a worry about cuts. I did lose a bead on the last day from running so low and being on 10 inch wheels. They would be better suited on 8 inch rims or bead locks.
I plan to replace them with 33X14.5 Swamper SSRs if i get the cash together. These Bias plies will go to the YJ project if i ever get to it. That will be almost exclusively a trail rig. Thats what these tires belong on.

Wow, 5 pages and only one mention of Goodyear Duratracs! I have a full set of 265-75-16 (tel:265-75-16) load C on my 2010 Wrangler JKu for just about 2 years now. These are easily the best tire for the money if you rig is dual purpose. They have been flawless in all off and on road conditions (dirt, mud, snow and sand) and all wet and dry road conditions/weather. When I first got them I was commuting about 10-15 miles a day so my ratio of on road to off road was a lot closer. Now I regularly commute to northern NJ am putting a lot of miles on them and I love these tires even more. They have just the right amount of hum and made my JK less soccer-mom and more offroad aggressive as far as looks. I regularly rotate all 5 and they are wearing very little and evenly. I have them mounted on Procomp 7069's in 16x8. I will consider larger Duratracs when I lift, probably in 315-75-16 (tel:315-75-16) to get just about a 35" tire.
The other tire I would consider is the Interco Trxus MT. Anyone have those? Thoughts on them?

I run military surplus wrangler MTs 37-12.5-16.5 on my f250. The up side is I have about 20,000 on them and there about half worn, not bad on a close to 8,000 lb truck. Other upside is there dirt cheap. Downside is they are terable in snow, wet roads, wet grass there ok in mud.
I run 36-12.5-16.5 surplus wrangler RTIIs on the Bronco and its the same as above. They suck even more in the snow but are a little better in mud, they do wobble but its par for the coarse being bias. Again there dirt cheap
I have 31-10.5-15 runway MTs on the blazer they are great in snow I haven't had them in mud. I don't know about price as they where on the truck when I got it.
