OK So ive been a member of this site a whole whopping week. But ive been wheeling for 10 years in some form or another. I know im a new guy and i hate to look like im preaching. BUT ive read a few of the threads on here talking about going wheeling on private property and why we dont have a legal spot to wheel on the Island.
I want to start a new thread and i hope it becomes sticky worthy at some point. There has been alot of activity at "the spot" lately and people are crying that they had plate #s taken and got kicked out and they dont understand why the cops hassled them. Hopefully the pictures that follow will help some to understand, where others already know why. Last Sunday i picked up 4 gallons of waste oil someone had dumped all the way back in the trails. At least a mile in. The effort it took to dump oil that can be dropped off legally at any service station baffles me. I took them with me and disposed of them at my shop properly. So this weekend i went in planning to take out more than i went in with. I know the mess was not made by us. Theres still no excuse.

A Jeep parts department all over.
Someone had a good time destroying an XJ back there and leaving parts all over the place. The seat has been there for over a month. Lots of people have wheeled back there and nobody could pick up the trash?? They had fun climbing the hills a 100 feet away but ignored all the trash thats piling up.
Heres the challenge. Take pics of trash on the beach, in the woods, hell even on the side of the road. THEN a pic of it in your ride or in a proper disposal place. Not just the trash. But a pic of the OUTLAWS being a responsible group. That leaves any place (legal/ or not) cleaner than we found it. I only had so much room in my XJ. But anything is better than nothing. I will be going back next week with my Comanche to get the rest of the parts pile. Nothing would make me happier to see another OO member beat me to it. So post them pics and clean it up.
P.S. im not a tree hugger really. But i love what little woods we have left, for wheeling or not. Its nice to just go out there to get away from it. Not to see a pile of tires scattered all over. Thanks.

Pictures of the garbage i could load into the XJ. I had some extra tires in the back so room was limited. I still took what i could.

Thanks man. I hope it spreads and becomes something positive. I will post more the next time i go out. I just hope its not just me posting pics. And its not a real gun. It had some cartridges that looked like batteries. At first i thought it was a paintball gun. I dont know??? I figured the last thing that we needed in there was something that looked like a gun.

First off, I think its outstanding what you did. I dont see how anyone can complain about you being back there if your actively picking up trash. I feel bad now that Ive never thought to do the same. I never contributed to the problem but I myself have never taken the steps to help fix it. Ive always pick up garbage on the beaches, but the woods need it too. Probably even more so. Illegal dumping is a huge problem. As for those parts. Having been in that spot and others, there are a lot of vehicles that are most likely stole and taken there to strip. More negative activity. Unfortunately I dont think theres much we can do about that. But the trash we can fix. There is a lot around the corner from me that people have been playing in for years. Im going to start there. Next chance I get I will follow your lead... Great Job!

I would be up for any sort of clean up effort. Im in if theres one organized. But my biggest point of the thread was to show that it does not need to be a huge mass effort to help. I didnt even scrape the surface. I only took what i could. I want everyone to feel that a little helps alot. We love to brag about our rigs and there mods. We like to post pics of mud holes and rocks and what our rigs can do. I want people to brag about this to. Lets see some pics people!!!

im down man. i was just walking down my local beach the other day thinking the same thing. especially now that not only is mankind destroying the beaches, mother nature is taking its toll too. i havnt seen gilgo or other south shore beaches yet but on long beach where the nissequague river lets out, all the homes are about to fall apart. most of their decks are in crumbles. it really is a shame. my numbers 767fiftyfivehundred. text me and as long as im not working or with my girlfriend id love to head down to the woods or beaches to do a cleanup.

I dont know what it was. It was broken and cracked in pieces. It was definatly not a real gun. An air rifle / paint gun / toy i dont know i honestly didnt play with it. If it was complete i would not have put it in my truck. I dont need that kind of trouble. And yes i took it out with me. its in the dumpster at my job. A locked compactor dumpster.

I am gonna follow in your footsteps too, I have been putting off doing the same thing on a small set of trails just down from the house... I have a buddy with a pickup and between the 2 of us i think we could start to make a differance. I have hiked these trails with the kids a few times and saw the garbage there last year... this year I think we will have to go and do some cleaning up. I will try to get a few people around here to join me.

If an OUTLAW picks up some trash in the woods and theres no one around, Does it make an impact???
The answer would be hell yea... just need to make sure you get media coverage for it to make noise.
by cleaning up your spots, are you doing something illegal, yea, techniclly, but you have good cause. If it is brought to the media, it could bring good things like the land owners seeing a group that actually cares and may give permission for that group to be permitted legally on that ground. It could happen, and I hope it does happen that way

Thanks. And the old Cherokee we named Grave digger. You need a tetnis shot if you get in it. Its our shop lot snow plow. The thing starts every time and runs like a top but is so badly rotted the fumes fill the cab up. So you end up plowing with the windows open. Its a badass truck but just to far gone to restore.

Brought 1800 pounds of scrapmetal out of the woods today with another member here who goes by the name of SHOMAN, we took out 2 whole cars pretty much 2 vw beetles and part of an oldsmobile! The straight 6 in the olds weighed in at 580 pounds.... Took 4 kids to get that sombitch in the back of my truck! Of course I got pics to prove it!
Here's a 300 something pound boat anchor we brought as well!

Goonies.nsd
04-23-2011, 05:31 PM
Cleaning up tires is a tuff one. If you drop off a few at a time at tire shops they will dispose of them. But you better do it when there closed. We get to work sometimes and people leave tires outside. It can be annoying but i would rather toss them properly than them throwing them in the woods.
Bandit1
04-26-2011, 06:58 PM
Once I get permission to access the land and trails, I came up with a great idea for the tires... layer them, fill in with dirt and make obsticals on the trails so its not just dirt and puddles.
I figure the tires are gonna be around along time anyway, might as well get some more use out of them.
also, called up city hall today to start the land owner research, and got one contact name and organization to start with. more to follow in the next week or so.

I saw that the parks department put up some new signs and finished the horse back load/unload lot. Some new barriers in good places and the trail look really clean...... untill i got really far in and the bigger the puddle the more getting stuck chaos, garbage i found :trash:
Of course the first thing i find is a lower XJ or ZJ air damin a tree like it was a trophy.

I drive a little further down the trail and another air dam. What the hell has it gone from flares to this now???

And even further down the trail some real mess. Someone got good and stuck and emptied out there Jeep. Picked up what i could but some was so water logged i couldnt put them in the XJ

You and me would both love to get your truck goin. I hate waiting for parts. But yeah we should set somethin up. I thought you went there last week you said tripleg?? Off 111? And silverzj, we should get a small group to go out there some Sunday or somethin. There not exactly legal wheeling trails but they are hunting, hiking, horse back riding and it looks like some mountain bike trails are being made back there as well. Regardless im sure no one will bother us if we are cleaning up.

Went for a drive and it took me through the spot for a quiet drive :) And found something that reminded me its been over 6 months since a post was made on this thread.
Came across this pile of garbage. All full of coolant or oil. WHY WHY WHY!!!!! You can drop this stuff off at any repair shop. Legally and its free. We are required to take it. Id rather walk in, in the morning and see these dropped at the shops door than way back in the woods.

Threw them all in the MJ and also came across 2 ZJ door panals a 1/4 mile down the trail from the flipped truck. Again. Why? These will all be disposed of properly tomorrow.

Thats where i found the door panals and the bottles where further up the trail. Id clean up around the ZJ too if i didnt worry about cops coming along thinking im picking it. 3 kids back there with a Bronco and trailer pickin off the XJ back in the black top area. I thought they where taking parts. They where taking metal to scrap. Thats fine by me. But there breaking tools and hittin the thing with hammers to get steel. What are they gonna get. Maybe $10 for an hours work? I told them to be careful. There where ritew where the cops like to come in. They seemed surprised. $10 worth of scrap wont pay for a ticket.
Itsa bad enough we have assholes trashing vehicles back there. But then it gets better when its picked clean. More great exposure for our hobby.
But the coolant and oil i had to grab. all we need is another asshole to think its funny to toss them at a tree and burst them open.

Yeah i found the bottles further up the trail in the direction your headed in the pic. Where the puddle is with the 6 bypasses to the left and the one to the right. They where sitting just off the trial. Easy as hell to spot being bright yellow. They where stacked like someone went out of there way to drive all the way in there to dump them. I just dont understand people. i wish we could legally wheel there, so we could actually set up regular cleanups. It would be nice to be able to maintain those trails. Not just for us to wheel. But because its the rite thing to do.

good for you goonies you are a true wheeler and realize the importance of maintaining open public trails it is a integral part of our responsibilities as wheelers to keep trails clean and clutter free cause the day the politicians decide they want that land the garbage that is left behind is usually their main argument for the reason that wheelers should not have access. Though i am not a part of any groups here in colorado i make sure that i am always part of at least 5 trail maintenance days here every summer may i suggest that this forum be a springboard for these kind of activities in order to preserve your trails and land. we only have one chance in our lives to preserve the limited land that is available lets leave something clean and beautiful so that one day our children can enjoy the activities we enjoy now. sorry for the tree hugger rhetoric but it is the most important thing we can do as wheelers.

Hug them trees. I know i can get a little annoyed and rant sometimes. What i really wish is that the powers that be realize that if they let us play we can help them keep the same land clean. All we have is beaches for legal offroading on Long Island. So they get attention and are kept clean. Our wooded trails end up a dumping spot for the people that dont want to pay to dispose there junk legally. Its just a shame.

Maybe you should call it the dumping ground from now on, sounds better than the spot. Too bad you didnt know any of the cops so you could work out a deal with them.

I have heard "The Pot/The Dumping Ground" is now off limits? Is this true, because I would love to take a ride in there with some of you guys and clean up.
