I'm starting this thread for those who head to the beaches and what to report the conditions they observed. Try to include date, time, beach name, storm damage, tide, wind, birds, bait fish, boats, and anything else that may help people keep track of whats going on on our 4x4 beaches. These are the only real legal places we have to drive on here on LI. Take care of them. Pick up after yourself and air down your tires... - Dominic

Took my first trip out to Democrat this afternoon. Didnt have the beach pass last year cause I was out to sea for most of the season. It felt great to be back. Storm had mostly passed. Made for a great sunset. Beach was relativity empty. Handed an OO flier to a young kid and his friend in a JK as I was airing down. Entrance looked good. Tide was high and ebbing. front side surf was big. Head high and above at times. No one fishing. No birds, no bait. Everything was hiding from the storm. I was glad to see the point and back side were open. The point looked very different than last year. Lost the hook at the end and some of the dunes on the front side. Damn plovers everywhere and fences up. Back side looked great but they never did fix the break in the rocks at the west end cove. Was pretty surprised to find there was NO AIR. Turned off for some reason. Had to drive over the bridges to Shell to air up. All in all a good start to the season...

Suffolk County Beach Information:
Suffolk County Government - Beach Conditions Update (http://www.co.suffolk.ny.us/Home/departments/parks/Beach%20Conditions%20Update.aspx)
Once the season starts up, the information is usually up to date. I would make a phone call to the respective beach before heading out anyway.
Air down and drive slow!
Smittys was open today, they usually update the site once every month!
Only open to just past the first cut on the outerbeach, due to plower nesting again. It's back to the Burma Rd for now...

Hit demo yesterday at around 1 pm. Took my little brother with his new Cherokee for the first time. Gave him a little lesson on beach driving. Got the the field 2 entrance, started to drop pressure, and and saw at least 5 guys in huge pickups just drive right on without airing down. Then since you have to drive down all of field 2 to get to the start of demo, there was guys driving fast, and weaving in and out of people walking near the water. by this time I was pissed. But we got to the point and it was huge!!! Granted we were at Low tide but ive never seen it so big. You are actually able to drive from the point down the back side to the rocks and back out the half way cut.... crazy!. Lots of guys fishing, even more just laying around enjoying the day, Cant wait till the time restrictions... empty it out a little. Didnt see an bird or bait action, But a beautiful day non the less. And my Brother and his Jeep did great. A good day at demo.

Just got off demo. Took a late night ride cause I was bored. First time out at high tide and there was still tons of beach. No wind, no bait fish, water like glass. Hung out on the back side rocks. The only thing for miles was a seal that came over to hang out with me. Nice night.

Good day of fishing today. Hit sore thumb with berm around 4 pm. Current was still moving pretty good. Expected a 4 pm low tide. Not much happening there so we headed over to demo. Beach was pretty crowded. Made our way to the point. Threw a little of everything. Buck tail, spoons, tins, poppers. No hits. Lots of bird bun none diving. Worked the point and then the back side. Still kinda cold, and wind has strong. Left about 7. On the way out saw a few guys in an old blazer buried to the rockers coming out of the entrance. Dont think Ive ever seen anyone that stuck. They didnt look like they belonged there or knew what they were doing so we drove right on past. No fish, but still a nice afternoon...

I don't really know how strict they are on certain things, but I will say this, I recently made a trip to robert moses. As I was exiting the beach access ramp back onto the parking area, a parks police vehicle was eying me and the other jeep with me like we had done something wrong. He didn't say anything, but he definately was trying to leave the impression that he was watching us. Mind you, we were actually fishing while out there. Go figure...

Wow that sucks man! Just curious, how come u didn't reach out to someone here or nearby for a tow? Couple of straps and off the beach you go. Is that really what they charge to get u off the beach? Good luck with the no start thing though.

Hit demo yesterday afternoon. After seeing israelcastro1989 and the air station, went and posted up on the front side just past pole 23. Thick fog out but pretty clam surf. Threw bunker all afternoon. Met up with tigeruppercut and another friend with a Commander. Blues were definitly out there but non brought in. One guy had a tin with yellow work bitten through, I had a bunch of hits but nothing in the end but a sea robin. Fog burned off late and made for a nice sunset.

Good day of fishing yesterday. Hit demo at 5. Got pulled over at the Moses pencil at a seat belt checkpoint. My buddy riding shotgun got a $130 ticket for no seat belt. I was wearing mine. Got on the beach, heavy winds. Tried plugging the front side by the jetty but wind was just too strong. Bailed and headed to the thumb and fished the rest of the incoming till about 2130. As we were pulling up to the beach we saw a young kid leaving with a keeper bass and a good size blue. I ended up picking up a 22" striper on a spoon w/ while buck tail. Only hit of the day for our group. Wind ended up calming and turned into a beautiful afternoon.

Demo at 5pm today. Bass everywhere. Rolled up on the front side and saw some friends pulling in bass left and right. All keepers. Huge pod of bunker cursing up and down the shore. Full on blitz right in front of my spot about 30 yards out. Everyone around me was baiting, I just came to plug... Which was my downfall. saw 5 keepers pulled in on both sides of me but they werent going for the lures. Threw everything I had. Ended up snagging a few full size bunker with a large tin w/ treble hook but thats it. Didnt have any gear to live line. Soo pissed I didnt have my bait pole or rigs.... Thats what I get for being unprepared! Heading to J&H tomorrow to pick up a few snag hooks. At least I know theres still fish around.

Truly insane afternoon at demo. I was on the beach watching the storm front roll over the bay coming straight at us. It looked like "the nothing" from the movie the never ending story. Just a massive wall of blackness. Wind was out of the south then died to nothing, then exploded out of the north!!! haha Ive never felt the power of a front as it passed over head. Didnt rain for 45 min after the front passed. Then the sky opened up. I had my half doors on the Jeep and didnt mind at all. We all jsut stood there in amazement, finished out beers and headed out at around 830. Drove home in the pouring rain. Good thing my interior is water proof ahhaha Great afternoon.... Oh and no fish to be seen...

Made the mistake and went to Sore Thumb yesterday, guess it was family day on the beach. Bring whomever you want permit or not... 4x4's lined up door to door on the beach yesterday and I'm sure that 90% of them didn't have permits as there were BBQ's set up, tents. Was like a free for all, finally found a spot to squeeze my junk into. Lot's of JK's there, met a dude with a really nice 83 CJ, Yellow. Really nice Jeep. The few people that were actually fishing we're catching Sea Robins, a couple of real big ones too. Saw one short fluke come up. Lots of people in water swimming. Glad I didn't buy any bait....

They just closed it recently this is the surf report from the fisherman " the closing of the outer beach at Demo couldn't have come at a worse time. State park officials were forced to close the beach due to the presence of piping plover chicks and threats from U.S fish and wildlife to shut down the park if the birds were not sufficiently protected. Thanks to the efforts of park staff, casters will have access to the inlet side, as they created a parking area just west of the rocks bordering the access road. There is no parking permitted along that stretch bordering the rocks and golf course because it will restrict access for other vehicles. Until the ocean beach is reopened, park I'n the designated area only. The parking area is the site that was being used to stockpile sand for beach replenishment. The beach will be open as soon as it is feasible."

Hit the thumb this afternoon. nothing. Saw 2 guys in a kayak snag a bunker right in front of me by the rocks. Then headed to Demo to see the carnage. Just the little strip of cove leading to the rocks on the back side right were you drive in is open. Current was taking a 8oz weight. The whole thing is bullshit! I HATE PLOVERS!

Wanst there 15 min and picked up 20" fluke. Hit on blig ol piece of bunker. Go figure. Saw a huge dead bluefish drifting past. A good day...

I was at Smith Point yesterday too. It was a madhouse! I cannot imagine the amount of garbage left on the beach after yesterday. I saw people breaking the snow fence down to go to the bathroom in the dunes. Crazy stuff! Last time I go there on the 4th of July.
At smiths point right now, beach is open, nice day out. Also the park police are doing random checks at night after the bridge

Hit the thumb today. Great weather, but worst fishing conditions ive seen in some time. 3 types of weed clogging everything up, current so strong was literally ripping my pole holder out of the sand. Saw no fish brought in. Threw squid and spearing, then some bunker. nothing. A keeper bass washed up on the shore right in front of me. Kinda odd. Still a nice day to be out there. But I think Im done actively fishing till the fall run....
Also heard that Demo will be totally open again starting the 15th.... Plover are finally starting to migrate. Damn birds....

Could be checking for equipment. They had a major check just after the main booth on Sunday. Making sure everyone had all the required equipment to be on the beach. Hopefully they start handing out some major fines to wake people up! It was still a madhouse out there, though.

Actually, the more I think about it, they were prob checking inspection and registrations after the bridge at Smith Point. They do that on big beach days. Once you are on the bridge, you can't turn around. They wouldn't be checking equipment there since most people are just driving cars and parking in the lot.

Hit the thumb yesterday at around 6. Got chased out by literally hundreds of green flies. So we ended up heading over to demo. Parked in the huge dredge lot at the end and walked down passed the rocks to the opening where the tide pool comes in on the back side. No more then 5 casts on a yellow popper and snagged a 16" weak fish. Really didnt expect that.... ahhaa See my build thread for pics.

I like incoming to high tide. I don't really think time matter too much. At night they tend to be on top a little more, but during the day they are still there, you just have to work them a little more with the chicken lines. I am heading out tomorrow evening and I will let you know how my first trip of the season goes. I also bring my cast net with me and if I see any schools of peanut bunker, I grab about 100 or so and freeze them up for my fluke trips! :)

The beach looked pretty good. I have never seen so many campers before. They also opened up the point. There was actually campers on the west side of the jetty. Never seen that before. We just opened Gilgo. We currently are experiencing some rough surf and high tides. I can't say with any certainty that it will remain open to the end of the year. You all know what 1 or 2 good storms can do. We will monitor regularly and keep you posted.

Went to demo today, was great as always, and took a stroll through sore thumb, it's open again as stated above but there really isn't much beach left to park on!

TAT -I believe smithspoint permit is the same as the state, open till dec 31st.
As for beaches and fishing... Ive spent the last 3 days fishing my ass off to yield nothing!
Sunday demos point, plugs and bunker, Not one hit. Saw guys pulling in monster blues all around me...
Monday morn at 3am headed out to Montauk, plugged the whole place from sunrise to about 11 am. Beach was full, birds working everywhere, NOT ONE FISH pulled in.
Tues Demo east front side. Threw bunker and plugs for a few hours.... nothing but skates and sea robins. Saw Comanche drive on. Jeep looks good.
ITs been a real rough fall run for me this year. Pretty frustrated. Not sure if I want to waste any more time this year!!!

Beach season is back. IF anyone takes a trip over be sure to report your finding. IE beach conditions, fishing reports, and anything else that you can think of. We have to be sure to take care of out beached since we dont have much else, here on LI anyway...
HIt up Demo Sunday for opening day. Fair amount of trucks. Beach looks to be in good shape. It was low incoming tide. Plover fences are up as usual for this time of year but point is open. THe tip has a drastic new look since the winter. Front side before the Jetty is real steep at low tie so be careful not to drive too close. Back side is pretty much the same. Small wash by entrance to bay side is pretty filled in. Sure it will open up with time and bring back some bait. And the collapsed rocks on the end seem to be holding in place. Hoping for a good year of fishing...

Smith Point Beach Report 5/31/12 - Day Tripping area is open from 1A for 1 mile. Cuts 2 & 3 are closed. Cut 1A to Burma to the Inlet. I'll be at the campground for the rest of the week, I'll post changes should there be any.

Smith Point update: outer beach cuts 2 & 3 will be be closed for the Plovers through June as per the admin building. I'm glad I got a run in yesterday morning before the closing.
*In addition to adding more campsites to the electric grid here they also added WIFI, solid signal on the East most edge of the campgrounds.

Ya, I was out at Smith's with some friends on Sunday, was a beautiful day but some ass-hat throttle junkies ripping around damn near got pulled out of their rigs... 10 MPH SPEED LIMIT!!!! there are kids EVERYWHERE out there... sorry, had to vent but that kind of crap is what gets off road areas closed.
Quick beach equipment question. How big does a "Jack board" need to be?

I wouldn't... you may actually need to use it some day. I carry a piece of 3/4" treated plywood about 10" X 10" which provides a nice safe base for my jack even in the loosest sand.

Left Smith Point yesterday, cocktails all over the bayside by the bridge (unless you want to take Burma from 1A to the Inlet). Incoming on tins (crippled herring , my preference) is doing the trick. Even got a few Fluke going after them (no doubt the bucktail).

Hit the sore thumb yesterday afternoon. Not really to fish, just enjoy the heat. Saw a serious mess of birds straight across the inlet on Demo. Bust have been a blue fish blitz. On the way out stopped to help a guy in a late 90's white F250. He kept loosing 4wd. Changed fuses but kept blowing. Must have has a short somewhere. Hooked up to him and did my best. Got him about 100 feet in an hr. Another guy in a big yellow dodge hooked up in front of me but still no good. We were real far in on the thumb and the sand is deep out there. He said he had a friend with a huge pick up coming to help. He was just to much truck for my 3k lb Jeep hahaahah I dont mind helping people who have some sort of breakage. But the idiots who are doing the wrong thing and get them selves in trouble Ill drive right past. Anyway I tried. Did my good deep for the summer. Hope he made it out with out the big bill....
